About this event

Trauma impacts every area of life as we seek to come to terms with the effects of the pandemic, the bitter legacy of colonialism and toxicity of 'cancel culture' enabled by social media. So how do our faith traditions address and have the potential to alleviate the shame that is an inevitable consequence?

On 9th February 2022 the Transforming Shame Network will be hosting an online conference to discuss the topical and pressing concerns of faith, trauma and shame.

What will the speakers talk about?

Talk 1: Reconciliation out of trauma and shame.

Dr Mano Emmanuel (Senior Lecturer in Applied Theology and Biblical Studies and Head of Academic Advancement at Colombo Theological Seminary in Sri Lanka) wrote on ‘Interpersonal reconciliation in a shame-oriented culture’ for her PhD in Peace Studies. She speaks from a cross-cultural perspective gained through studying in London and living in Sri Lanka.

Talk 2: Impossible Resurrections: Thinking Theologically with Trauma and Shame

Dr Karen O’Donnell (Programme Leader for Contemporary Spirituality Studies at Sarum College, Salisbury, England) has focused her research on trauma theology, and her recent work on reproductive loss from a theological perspective will be published in 2022.

How can I participate?

There will be plenty of opportunities to take part, through:

• Breakout room discussions

• Creative reflections in dance and movement

Feedback on our 2020 symposium:

"The whole thing was absolutely unmissable

Such a tonic - real people wrestling with real questions and struggles.”

"A really challenging, informative and stimulating morning”,

"More people need to hear this stuff.”
